The NPA will hold its 2018 Seminar and Business Meeting

This is a packed day of information useful for all examiners!  We will have a panel of experts for the full day to provide expertise on court testimony, legal issues, and criminal offender profiles.  The day will breakdown as follows:

7:45 AM - 8:00 AM:  Opening Remarks

8:00 AM - 10:00 AM - Case Study: The Pillowcase Rapist.  The 'Pillowcase Rapist' is the most prolific serial rapist in California.  Polygraph testimony played a pivotal role in his latest court case.  Join Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney Karen Thorp and NPA Vice President John Odum as they discuss the case.  Dicussion will include:

  • Establishing yourself as an Expert Witness in polygraph
  • Using polygraph test results and disclosures in court
  • Review of civil commitment laws for sexually violent predators

10:15 AM - 12:00 PM - Legal Updates: Subpoenas and Court Testimony.  Join Attorney Bruce Voss, Counsel for California Association of Polygraph Examiners, for this interactive session.  Bring your questions!  Dicussion will include:

  • Understanding types of subpoenaes 
  • How to respond to subpoenaes 
  • Tips for providing court testimony
  • Protecting yourself from liability, errors and omissions

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM - Lunch 

1:00 PM - 4:00 PM - Sex Offender Profiles and Psychopathology.  Join forensic psychologist, Dr. Tricia Busby, in this dynamic presentation to understand the criminal sex offender's mind, underlying psychopathology and current treatment approaches.  Tips on how to interview these types of offenders will also be reviewed.  

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM - Open Panel Discussion.  Join all of Monday's speakers in an interactive question and answer session.  Bring your questions about legal issues, court testimony, polygraph and treatment issues.

5:00 PM - 7:00 PM - Social Reception.  Meet new and old colleagues, vendors and speakers.  This is a great time to network and relax with a drink in hand!

8:00 AM - 12:00 PM - Managing Countermeasures.  We are fortunate to have Walt Goodson with us all morning for a discussion on countermeasures. Join Walt to discuss this challenging issue in polygraph.  

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM - Lunch

1:00 PM to 3:00 PM - General Business Meeting.  Join the NPA Board to discuss current polygraph issues and vote in the 2018 Board elections!

Wednesday January 24, 2018

8:00 AM - 12:00 PM - Pharmacology, Physiology and Chemical Countermeasures.  Patty Odum, Nurse Practitioner, will review drugs that can affect the autonomic nervous system and substances that are sometimes used in chemical countermeasures.  This is an updated presentation with the latest information on controlled substances and other drugs.

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM - Lunch

1:00 PM - 5:00 PM - Mind Mapping.  Chip Morgan will discuss incorporating Mind Maps in your pre-employment and PCSOT exams.
